Anyone who watches this and still has their money in a bank instead of a credit union should think really hard about their options...
"Your money is not here. It's in Joe's house...
2:47 the true badass moment of this scene.
“Hey what the hell you doin’ with my money in your house, Joe?”
Y’know, in the Simpsons parody, I always thought the banker sounded alot like James Stewart
Who else is here because of the bank of England page lol
Although it may not seem significant on it's face, the blairing siren going by was brilliantly placed. It illustrated perfectly the natural herd mentality of human beings. Capra was a genius.
"I've never really seen one before, but that's got all the earmarks of being a run." Line about run on the bank in It's a Wonderful Life.
Does anyone else think it's funny when seeing what life in "Pottersville" was like without George around? It was hopping! With bars and lights and lots of dancing girls! The town was actually better off without him! Well, people were meaner and angrier but still...
But none of the people in Pottersville were genuinely happy. Sure, there was cheap booze, peepshows, and casinos practically on every corner, but how many of those people do you think were residents of “Bedford Falls” by choice and not people who were just passing through Pottersville, wanting a fleeting escape from reality (on Christmas Eve, of all nights)? Without George, the Building and Loan would have died with his father, leaving Henry Potter as the only real option for people in the town to go to have overpriced slums rented out to them instead of having quality homes built that they would own. Sure, with George, the town wasn’t awash in neon lights, but with places like Bailey Park that were continually expanding, who’s to say that Bedford Falls wouldn’t have still grown in the years after the film takes place? I might be reading too much into it, but I think that was the point of the film. George traded short-term wealth for having a loving wife and children, helping others, and building a caring community in the long term. Compare that to someone like Potter (who’d probably sell the plot his mother was buried in for a profit), who probably had more money than anyone in the world would imagine, but he had no family, no known friends, no one who cared if he lived or died unless it was tied to their finances. Think of it like this: If Potter was in the same position George was in at the end of the movie, do you think he’d have anyone willing to help him out as the people of Bedford Falls did for George, or would they have been ready to string him up like a trophy-winning trout?
@@SpaceCase132 No man, you're nutz. Life would have been SOOOOO much better if George had not been born. Pottersville was raking in the dough! Who cares about Happiness? I'd rather have money in my pocket.
@@DeploraBill59 Don’t forget about the people who were affected by George’s life (another point of the movie). Because George Bailey wasn’t born, his brother drowned before he was even 10 and was subsequently unable to save a troopship from a kamikaze attack, leading to the (albeit indirect) deaths of dozens or possibly hundreds of soldiers. Mr. Gower would have never noticed the poison he put in a customer's prescription (as he was too distraught by his son’s death), resulting in that customer's death, his imprisonment for manslaughter, and subsequent status as a broken, homeless man. Mary Hatch never married or had a family, and while we don’t know what her life is like in Pottersville, if it’s anything like Ernie Bishop’s life (a divorced man struggling to make ends meet to continue renting out one of Potter’s slum houses), then it can’t be a positive life. You and I clearly disagree about this type of thing (either that, or I can’t pick up on any sarcasm in this thread). Still, if I had to choose between having a modest living with a loving family and a positive community that would have my back in the worst of times and a life of boundless wealth without a family and friends who genuinely cared for my company outside of obvious financial incentives, I’d more often than not choose a loving community.
Mary offers up their $2,000 wedding fund and George doesn't bat an eye, he just goes right along with her. Perfect team. Husband-and-wife dynamite squad. Absolute perfect match.
Why is Tom made out to be the unreasonable one here?
My fav part of film where people stuck together n the Depression
It's incredible that the way george keeps the bank afloat is literally by explaining how the banks really work
People sure did dress better back then.
Can't you understand what's happening here? Don't you see what's happening? - A film like this would never be made today. It's too radical.
I finally get the Simpsons reference
The guy who asked for 240 dollars always pissed me off that was their honey moom FFS he couldn't have got by on 100 until the bank reopened no?
a telling tale. for a till. your thinking about the worth of a dollar all wrong. its not shareholders. its tom. and and mary
“Hey, what’s going on Mr Bailey?
We just ain’t like this no more………
why is he celebratin? Is he going to be bailed out tmr or am I missing something
He could have done a stock buy back for 51 cents
Verstandig ingezien. Succes en sterkte voor je geheugentraining 😊
I've always wanted to know how many people were in the B&L wanting money. It was quite a task making $1758.00 stretch🤔
Underrated scene-Mrs Thompson, who had been positively paniced by the economic situation in story ("my husband hasn't worked in lver a year and I need money!") Is positively scared at the idea id her baker (and his wife, lets give Mary her due) straight up putting their own livelihood forward (for her) "but that's your own money george!". Nothing puts thing into perspective more than someone putting as much (or more) than you into somethig...
The Simpsons parody of this scene is so funny
very good LADY Goerge's * WIFE *.
No wonder the bank was going bust. George’s accounting methods were a little dodgy.
This is a movie that LITERALLY every boomer has watched a dozen times. It accurately depicts the kind of predatory capitalism we have in America. Yet, none has put two and two together and most have kept voting Repub, who perpetuate this dog eat dog setup. The French, the British, and the Dutch - none of the western Europeans; heck - none of the Eastern Europeans, including the miserable Russia and Ukraine - experience this. Their social net arrangements are simply not allowing it. But we - the land of the dumb and the confused - sure do. Thousands of American fams experience losing their house DAILY. Shame on us.
It’s a shame George never got to travel outside Bedford Falls. 😔
"Potter Isn't Selling, Potter's Buying!" Sound familiar?
It's the kind of truck billionaires would try today.
@@thewewguy8t88they're not just trying it, they are doing it. Why do you think everything is becoming more expensive and rent is astronomical? The world has been taken over by Potters and the regular guy is getting screwed.
America now is own by huge corporations and other nations instead of people in the community
What’s your point?
We saw Chris last night and I thought Sir George was awesome. Seriously! He should be recording his own music!!
Did anyone know that the woman George kissed is Grandma Walton
Very young Grandma Walton.
Yes very moveing and emotional 😮'
I used to go to a prosperity gospel church where they sided with Mr potter n said George was against Gods will.
One man can make a difference. One decent, honorable man CAN make a difference. I believe that because I don't want to live if I can't believe it's true. I've seen this film I can't remember how many times, and the decency and courage of George Bailey always shines through.
Beautiful film, my favourite film. Lovely theme, everyone needs friends a d family.
You will know it when you see it but grandma Walton is in the scene
What a sweet movie 🎥 😍 ☺ 👌 💖 💕
I like to see them do a 24-hour marathon of it's a wonderful Life. I think it'd be great to do.
This particular scene although on a comedy by Mel Brooks, always strikes me as the movie’s most powerful one. And no wonder, all because of Shakespeare!
It's a remake of Legendary 1942 movie. Not really Mel Brooks comedy This is great but still not good as Orginal
@@travisbickle4360 there were creative liberties done though..not so much in this scene. For example, brooks' character is combined from 2 separate characters from the 1942 version. I do find it interesting watching 2 versions of the same film and comparing them. Another example is "bedtime story", "dirty rotten scoundrels" and "the hustle", being 3 versions of the same film but i find the steve martin version to be superior to the marlon brando and rebel wilson versions. For "to be or not to be", i do like newer version better, but it is not to say the original was bad in any way. It is worth saying that shakespeare is from a time and place where it is expected for a jew to be the villain. But even so, the way he wrote shylock, you feel compelled to side with him over antonio. I think the point that the OP was trying to make is that "to bait fish withal" is such a timeless speech that it can resonate in future generations and in other contexts.
For a comedy, this is one of two scenes that make me cry. (The other is the dog running to the plane.)
2:36
George and Mary are definitely my favorite onscreen couple, and I think a lot of it has to do with the way the character of Mary Bailey is written. In an era where women characters often failed the Bechdel Test, Mary stands out as one of the most reliable heroes in film, consistently making the best of bad circumstances and providing an emotionally stable foundation for her relationship with George (who, for all his good intentions, was often erratic). Here she literally saves Bedford Fallls, using her wedding and honeymoon money to keep the Building and Loan afloat during the Depression.
so if anything, she should be the one given credit for saving the town, not George.
3:50 I knew bank runs were bad, but I never knew we lost 4 seconds out of every minute because of it.
This guy reminds me of my uncle Barney, a generous hearted man who bailed out many folks. They all screwed him in the end.
The should've went to Bill's house and Fred's house to get their money back
What a great scene, if you are student of human nature, you can see it at its best, it's worst and everywhere in between. Unfortunately, we have to many Mr. Potter's and to few George Bailey's in the business world today. Love of money truley is the root of all evil. Speaking of evil, i always wondered what Potter did with that envelope full of cash that Uncle Billy carelessly handed him wrapped up in that newspaer. Any idea's?
Check out the old SNL skit for the "lost ending" version. Potter gets his, and good, brother.
Potter is a tragic figure. Unlike the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge, Potter doesn't change his ways.
